Newsletter #10 2025: Tuesday 28 October 2025
Principal's Message

Dear Members of the St Joseph’s College Family,
Welcome back to school for a very energetic and busy Term 4. We are now into our third week and I would like to thank our students for settling back into their routines as well as they have, thanks to their parents and families for getting them to school on time, and to their teachers for their focus, perseverance and above all patience as we work towards the common goal of all that is required from all of us for ending this school year well.
Examinations
During this time of Year 12 students sitting their HSC, examination periods are about to commence for Year 10, and later followed by Years 7-9.
Our Year 12s have one more week of exams after this one and, most sincerely, I encourage you all to keep going. You’ve made it this far, so don’t let up now!
Reading scripture has a way of finding a teaching of Jesus that makes it relevant in our daily lives. I came across one such piece of scripture, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible" (Mt 19:26). This verse, spoken by Jesus, emphasises that human efforts alone are insufficient for salvation, but salvation is achievable through God's power. The context is the disciples' astonishment at Jesus's teaching that it is difficult for the wealthy to enter the kingdom of God, which Jesus explained by saying it is impossible for humans to save themselves, but with God, anything is possible.
It seemed to also reflect on your year group’s theme this year of, “All things are possible for those who believe” (Mk 9:23), and add this prayer to your own:
Jesus, teacher and friend, be with me now as I sit this exam. Give me a peaceful heart, a focused mind, and a steady hand. Help me to remember what I have learned, to answer wisely and well, and to persevere when I am tired and weary. Amen.
To our Year 10 students, I wish you every success when you start your examinations next Wednesday, 5 November, and I wish the same for our students in Years 7-9 when they begin theirs on Thursday 20 November.
Lord, I simply ask today for peace and calm as my exam approaches. Quiet my mind and ease my anxiousness. Be with me as I take my test. Give me the grace to trust fully in You for whatever the future holds for me, in all my academic pursuits and with my life as a whole. Amen.
Please always try to remember that examinations are not a bad thing. As time goes on, sitting an exam will become like second nature and, by the time the HSC comes around, they will be one of a number of exams that you will be not only capable of sitting but something you have prepared yourself for the whole time you have been a student here. Don’t give up and do not be afraid!
Our Leader of Pedagogy, Mr Carlo Trimboli, has included an article in today’s newsletter with the Study Skills Tips for October: Parental Support During Assessment Periods which is very interesting reading. ReachOut also has some helpful ideas for students on how to deal with exam anxiety.

Remembrance Day 2025 - Tuesday 11 November
On 11 November every year, we as a nation commemorate Remembrance Day. Remembrance Day is a time for Australians to unite in solemn respect and remembrance for all those who died or suffered.
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs states that:

Remembrance Day is one of the most important days on our commemorative calendar. It's a day when we acknowledge those who died or suffered while serving in wars, conflicts and peace operations. Remembrance Day is held on 11 November each year. This is the anniversary of the Armistice of 1918 that ended fighting in World War I. The war didn't officially end until 28 June 1919 with the Treaty of Versailles. People in Australia and many other countries observe one minute's silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month because that's when the Armistice came into effect. It's a time to honour our service personnel who died or suffered in the service of Australia.
We will join in the observance of a minute’s silence on Monday 11 November.
Year 12 2025 Graduation Formal - Friday 14 November
In my second year now as Principal, I have been again impressed with our Year 12 group of graduates, and how they have conducted themselves as the Senior 2025 cohort. It has been my proud privilege to witness them reach the end of their formal schooling at the College and how they have supported each other throughout.
In just a couple of weeks, the final rite of passage of Year 12 2025 takes place with the celebrations at our Graduation Formal on the evening of Friday 14 November. This is their very last school function and we wish them all very well. I’m sure the evening will be a great success.
Year 7 2026 Orientation Happenings
This week we hold our first event welcoming students for next year’s commencing Year 7 students, with the Supported Orientation Day on Thursday 30 October.
We then look forward to welcoming more current Year 6 students to the College for their Year 7 2026 Orientation Day on Wednesday 19 November.
It is always fun to witness their excitement as the newest intake of SJC students spends the day here, getting to know one another, and refreshing themselves on all they might expect to encounter when they start school with us next year at the College.
On the evening of Wednesday 19 November, we will welcome all of their parents and carers to our Information Evening. I’m sure it will be a most informative time for all as we seek to make the transition from primary school to secondary school as seamless as possible.
Keeping Up-to-date
I ask that you please take the time to read through this newsletter, as you will find more important information that will help you navigate your way through to the mid-point of this term. By keeping up-to-date with all that is happening, it ensures that your child gets the most out of each day at school.
Again, I thank you for your continued support of all that we do at the College. It is greatly appreciated.
Saint Joseph. Pray for us.
God Bless
Mr Ryan Campbell
Principal
Principal's Notes
Leaving St Joseph’s College
During the second semester of a school year, families tend to make decisions about moving to a new area because of employment changes, etc.
We ask that all parents/carers of students who will not be returning to St Joseph’s College in 2025, to either send in a letter, or to email the College (sjcbanora@lism.catholic.edu.au), confirming when the student will be leaving and the new school or institution they will be attending.
All students who leave St Joseph’s College are required to complete a Clearance Form which includes the return of all College library books and textbooks.
Summer Uniform Term 4
We have returned to Summer Uniform requirements this term, which means no ties for the boys in their formal uniform. If you haven’t already attended to any outstanding uniform issues, I ask that you ensure that all uniform items are cleaned and that students return with a neat and clean uniform and a tidy appearance, which includes appropriate hair and grooming to comply with the school regulations.
It is an expectation that boys should be clean shaven on arrival each and every school day at the College, and all students should leave home and travel to the College dressed as per expectations here at the College. Uniform or grooming concerns may result in punitive actions taken until the matter is resolved. Parents and carers are asked to positively encourage correct uniform and grooming at all times.
For further information, the College Uniform Policy can be found on the College website.
Reminder: Students Leaving School Early Through the School Day
A quick reminder of the process for when your child is to leave early:
- Parents/carers are to record the early departure in Compass, by the morning of the departure and no later than 10am.
- The student is to meet their parent/carer at Parent Reception at the time stipulated and sign out occurs.
- Due to privacy reasons, paging is very limited, so there will be no paging during the breaks (recess or lunch), and there are to be no calls to the classrooms interrupting lessons to call students to the office. If your child is leaving early, it is their responsibility to attend the office on time.
- We understand that emergencies arise, however, most of the recent interruptions and arrangements have been due to a lapse in following procedures. Therefore, some forward planning from home will lessen the current impact at the College and allow student focus to remain on learning.
Your support is appreciated.

RiTE & SCU Masters of Teaching Enrolment
A new way of preparing teachers comes to our schools
From 2026, our Catholic Schools in Tweed Heads, Pottsville and Coffs Harbour will be part of an exciting new program with Southern Cross University that reimagines how teachers are trained.
The Reimagining Teacher Education (RiTE) initiative will see Master of Teaching students learning in classrooms from the very first week of their studies. Instead of waiting until the end of their degree to gain experience, these Associate Teachers will spend two days a week in schools throughout their training.
What this means for our Catholic schools
- Extra support in classrooms for teachers and students.
- Fresh energy and ideas from aspiring teachers.
- Strong mentoring links between experienced staff and the next generation of educators.
Adam Spencer, Director of Catholic Schools, says our schools are looking forward to welcoming these student teachers. “Our students and staff will benefit from the added support and new perspectives, while these future teachers gain valuable experience in a real school community.”
Thinking of becoming a teacher?
If you’ve ever thought about teaching, this could be the time. Enrolments in the Southern Cross University Master of Teaching opens on 11 November 2025 with classes commencing early March 2026. With the RiTE program, you’ll not only study but also gain practical experience in our Catholic Schools from the start.

Student Engagement and Application Reports
St Joseph’s College provides Student Engagement and Application Reports (SEAAR) periodically throughout the year. SEAAR is a system that monitors and acknowledges students' individual effort and application in each subject. Scores are based on each student’s effort in completing classwork and homework to the best of their ability; being punctual and organised for class; and behaviour in the learning environment. SEAAR Cycle 5 was released on Friday 26 September. If you have not already done so, please visit Compass to access and view your child’s SEAAR and have a conversation with them regarding areas of strength and areas for growth.
Please note that those students who receive a ‘Gold SEAAR’ across all cycles throughout the year will be invited to attend the Rewards Day at Wet ‘n’ Wild at the end of the year.

Social Media Age Restrictions
New legislation is set to come into effect in Australia on 10 December. This legislation will require certain social media services to take reasonable steps to prevent minors under the age of 16 from having and creating social media.
To help you get ready for these restrictions, the Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools has provided our families with the link to the eSafety Commissioner's Action Plan for under 16s, as well as information for our parents and carers to assist them through this period of adjustment, the first of three provided in today's newsletter:
How The Social Media Age Restrictions Will Help Keep Your Teen Safe

Council of Catholic School Parents (CCSP) Newsletter: ParentTalk
No doubt our families would be aware of the Council of Catholic School Parents which was established in 1995. The CCSP is the body officially recognised by the Bishops of NSW/ACT and Catholic Schools NSW to represent the interests of families of children in all NSW Catholic schools. (Click here for CCSP website)
The CCSP ParentTalk newsletter aims to provide parents and carers with relevant and timely information about developments in education, wellbeing, CCSP advocacy program and significant Catholic news and events. Parents may also like to subscribe to the ParentTalk newsletter, which provides interesting articles for parents in Catholic schools.

New Arrivals & Accessible Reading in the Library!
This month, the library has significantly expanded its Graphic Novel and Manga collection, bringing in some of the most anticipated new series. We are excited to feature the first volumes of "Demon Slayer”—a gripping action-fantasy. “Attack on the Titan” a fresh take on a futuristic war against the Titan’s. Also, for our younger readers “One Piece” is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, as he explores the Grand Line in search of the mythical treasure known as the "One Piece" to become the next King of the Pirates.
These stories are a huge hit and are flying off the shelves!
We also want to highlight how this format supports all our readers. Manga and Graphic Novels are incredibly effective for students of varying reading levels. The use of visual panels, dynamic illustrations, and dialogue broken into smaller, contained speech bubbles helps reduce reading fatigue and significantly aids in comprehension. They allow readers to follow the plot and connect with characters without being overwhelmed by large blocks of text, making reading an enjoyable and accessible experience for everyone. We encourage every student to explore our diverse and growing collection!
