Newsletter 8: Tuesday 3 September 2024
Principal's Message
Dear Members of the St Joseph's College Family,
Last Friday, 30 August, was Jersey Day, and thank you to all those members of the school community who wore their favourite sporting jersey in support of this initiative. As the Jersey Day organisers note, this is an awareness campaign to begin the conversation with family and friends about the importance of becoming an organ and tissue donor. Jersey Day was inspired by the gift of life that Nathan Gremmo gave to six people when he became an organ donor at age 13.
It genuinely feels like Spring is in the air with the beautiful weather we’ve been experiencing of late, and actually most of this year’s Winter season. The Spring season started on Sunday 1 September, which also happened to fall on Father’s Day this year. Father's Day in Australia is celebrated on the first Sunday in September, and is a special day dedicated to honouring and appreciating fathers and father figures.
I’d like to share with you a Father’s Day prayer I read recently:
Heavenly Father, You entrusted your Son Jesus, the child of Mary, to the care of Joseph, his foster father. Bless all fathers and grandfathers as they care for their families. Give them strength and wisdom, tenderness and patience, give them the ability to love in a way that reflects your love. Support them in the work they have to do, protecting those who look to them, as we look to you for love and salvation. Help us to love them in a way that would bring honour to You and them. Bless and heal all those wounded by the imperfections of their fathers and grant an eternal rest to our fathers you have called from this life to yourself, through Jesus Christ Lord. Amen.
I hope that on Sunday, all fathers, and those who have taken on the responsibility of ‘fathering’ their family, had a most Happy Father’s Day!
St Joseph participated in ‘salvation history’ by being a husband to Mary and a foster father to Jesus. He trusted in God and became the foundation of the Holy Family. We especially at St Joseph’s College recognise Saint Joseph’s importance because he cooperated with God’s grace, including guiding Mary and Jesus to Jesus’ birthplace, Bethlehem, and then to and from Egypt when Jesus’ life was threatened by Herod. His devotion to and care of his family has been recognised by the Church for many years and I’m most proud that our College is named in his honour. Our foster father, in today's terms, showed up, was accepting and generous in his care, and was obedient to the call of God to look after His child. We’re most grateful for this kind of role model, and we can certainly aspire to achieve his familial devotion. And as we end the College prayer each time, we ask for an additional blessing … Saint Joseph, pray for us.
I’d also like to ask for your prayers for all our students as we continue with the ongoing learning journey:
Dear Lord, We thank you for this new school day and everything it has to offer. We ask that you give us the strength and courage to do our daily tasks with a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn. Guide us through each lesson and help us understand complex topics that may come our way by giving us the grace we need to remember and retain the knowledge. As we come together from different backgrounds, please help us to respect each other’s differences and work as a team towards academic success. Give us patience and grace when we face challenges in class and equip us with the tools needed to find solutions. Let us be united no matter the situation and never fear being wrong in our answers. We thank you. Amen.
No doubt many have heard the expression, ‘the past is history, the future a mystery, so today’s a gift - that’s why it's called the “present”,’ and I’d like to take that further and say that each day at school is a gift; but more importantly it's a chance as well as a choice. Every day we have the opportunity to make it a good day not only for ourselves but for everyone else around us, because what we ultimately make of it is what we choose to do.

Parent / Teacher / Student Meetings
Thank you to those of of you who made time last night to meet with your child/ren’s teachers. The feedback gained by the teaching staff and you as parents and carers is invaluable, and leads to building stronger relationships between home and school.
If you were unable to make a booking, please be aware that while these parent/teacher nights are an opportunity to meet face-to-face with your child's teacher, outside of these events you can always contact teachers via their College email (staff email addresses are listed on the College website).
Please be aware that a teacher’s first duty is teaching and attending to the students in their care. This may mean at times that staff are teaching all day, assisting students or in meetings. We ask you to be mindful of this as there should be no expectation to receive an immediate response. Teachers will endeavour to respond to you between 8:00am and 4:00pm and within three days.
Staffing in Term 3
We welcome back Mr Davoren as Head of Hoade House (co-leading with Mrs Jones), and most sincerely thank Mrs Mcleod for her support throughout Semester 1 in taking on that role in Mr Davoren's absence. Similarly, Mr Morrison (Leader of Learning-PDHPE) is on leave for Semester 2, and Ms Reynolds will fill that leadership role in his absence, while Ms Pennay takes on the role of Leader of Operations that Mr Morrison also held. Ms Toohey will be assisting Ms Reynolds in the ALOL position for PDHPE. I thank everyone who steps forward to take up these positions, as they really do keep the College running, and allow for consistent support for our students.

Finishing the Term Well
As a staff, everyone here at the College wants to see all students do well, and I would go further and say we want you all to excel. So much of how a student copes in high school determines their path moving beyond the secondary level. So much is on the individual, but I really believe that if you can find some purpose to your work, it will undoubtedly show in your results.
I ask everyone in the school community to pray for our Year 12 students as they finish their formal lessons and head towards their ‘lasts’ at the College including readying themselves for the HSC exams prior to that period, and finally their graduation farewell and their formal; for our Year 11 students as they prepare for exams this term and start their HSC course in Term 4, as well as taking on the roles of our new senior leaders; and for our junior students as they too look towards student leadership roles, as well as finalising their learnings in preparation for their exams next term.
I include a link to the Year 12 2024 EOY preparations letter issued to our 2024 Seniors and their families last week.
Term 3 is certainly a busy time and very much a season of change as a number of rites of passage are recognised and celebrated. A kind of metamorphosis takes place in the second half of a school year, as our most senior year group leaves, and we look at a change in the school population. The final stage is the changeover in the new school year with the intake of the incoming Year 7 group. At that time, we finally have all Year 7 to Year 12 . . . and then we start all over again! Schools are by their very nature dynamic and constantly changing. “The only constant in life is change.” (Heraclitus)
To help you at whatever stage your child is at, I ask that you please take the time to read through this newsletter, as you will find more important information that will help you navigate your way through to the conclusion of this term. By keeping up-to-date with all that is happening, it ensures that your child gets the most out of each day at school.
I thank you for your continued support for all that we do and strive to achieve at St Joseph's College.
God Bless
Mr Ryan Campbell

Principal's Notes
Leaving St Joseph’s College
During the second semester of a school year, families tend to make decisions about moving to a new area because of employment changes, etc.
We ask that all parents/carers of students who will not be returning to St Joseph’s College in 2025, to either send in a letter, or to email the College (sjcbanora@lism.catholic.edu.au), confirming when the student will be leaving and the new school or institution they will be attending.
All students who leave St Joseph’s College are required to complete a Clearance Form which includes the return of all College library books and textbooks.
Uniform Expectations - Term 3 ‘Winter Uniform’
We continue with the Winter Uniform throughout Term 3, and this includes our boys wearing ties. Please note that only the College jumper or College jacket can be worn as outer garments. No other jumpers, hoodies, jackets, etc can be worn.
For further information, the College Uniform Policy can be found on the College website. Parents and carers are asked to positively encourage correct uniform and grooming at all times. Students should leave home and travel to the College dressed as per expectations here at the College. Uniform or grooming concerns may result in punitive actions taken until the matter is resolved.
Duty of Care and Early Departures Through the School Day
It is our Duty of Care to provide a safe and supportive environment, and this also includes being able to identify any adult who comes to our Parent Reception to collect a student. If we do not follow procedure, potentially a student could leave our school grounds with an unidentified adult, for which we are not prepared to take that risk for safety and legal reasons.
Therefore, we ask our families to follow the procedure:
If you are collecting a student early, can you please:
- Provide your child with a note (separate from the diary), briefly indicating the reason and stating the time you as parent/carer will be collecting your child from the Parent Reception. (This note should be presented by the student to the Student Reception at their earliest convenience upon their arrival to school).
- Remind your child to be at the Parent Reception at the time stated in your note.
- Meet your child at the Parent Reception to sign them out from the College.
Please allow enough time to park and walk up to the Parent Reception to collect your child/ren. Please also be mindful that this process is done in the best interest of our students, your child/ren, to ensure they get to where they need to go as safely as possible. Please be patient with our staff assisting at Parent Reception to ensure these processes are followed.
Please also be aware that should you have another person collecting your child on your behalf, you should write these details in your note - if you do not make this clear, our office staff will need to verify the identity of the person who is collecting the student, and they will be asked to provide proof of identity.
We ask all visitors to please remain calm and speak with respect to our staff. They are simply following our procedure and we are doing our best to ensure the safety of our students.
A last-minute phone request for a student to leave College grounds puts the safety of a student at risk and places undue pressure on our Administration Staff. We simply ask families to follow this procedure.
Opportunity for Parents: Supporting Mental Health Wellbeing of Children and Young People
Research into how to best support children and young people with mental health challenges is critical to ensuring that as a society we have evidence-based, best practice support strategies for our young people.
Southern Cross University is offering parents of children aged 10-13 with mental health needs an opportunity to access a high quality online education program as part of a research project.
Further information is available on this flyer for those parents/carers who would like to learn more or apply to be a part of this research project.

We're currently over-run with 'pre-loved' uniform items, so if you are on the lookout for a particular item (or items!), we just might have what you're looking for.
Please visit the College office, or ask your child to come in to the Student Reception, as we would love to clear the excess stock we currently have. And best of all it would be for free! (If you would like to make a gold coin donation, you would be most welcome to, but payment is not required.) All items have been washed and are clean and presentable.
Mission Relay & Socktober Event
We are thrilled to inform you about an exciting upcoming event at our school on Wednesday, 4 September (Week 7) – the Mission Relay, held in conjunction with Socktober, a Catholic Mission initiative.
About the Mission Relay:
The Mission Relay is a school-wide event designed to foster teamwork, house spirit, and community engagement. Throughout the day, students from each of the four houses—Dalton, Hanly, Hoade, and Reynolds—will participate in a continuous baton relay around our 400m track. The relay will run all day, with different year groups taking responsibility for specific periods, ensuring that the batons are always in motion.
How the Relay Works:
Each house will be represented by nine batons, one for each AWC group within the house. The relay will begin with Year 10 students during Period 1 and will continue through the day, with each year group taking over during their assigned period. The event will culminate in Year 7 students completing the relay during Period 5. Year 12 students and AWC teachers will manage the relay during AWC time, as well as recess and lunch, ensuring that the event flows smoothly from start to finish.
Socktober – Wear Crazy Socks!
In support of Catholic Mission's Socktober initiative, we encourage all students to wear their craziest socks on the day and a gold coin donation. Socktober aims to raise awareness and funds for children in need around the world, reflecting our Catholic values of compassion, charity, and community support.
Last year, Socktober raised nearly $30,000 across 37 schools in our diocese, providing vital support to the Maria Auxiliadora Medical Clinic in Timor Leste. This year, our focus is on supporting the Don Bosco Caring Centre in Mongolia, which helps vulnerable children access education and essential care.
In addition to the relay and Socktober activities, there will be a BBQ on the day with all proceeds going to the Catholic Mission for Socktober.
Key Details:
Year Group Responsibilities:
- AWC: Year 12 and AWC teachers
- Period 1: Year 10
- Period 2: Year 11
- Period 3: Year 8
- Period 4: Year 9
- Period 5: Year 7
- Recess and Lunch: Year 12 and AWC teachers
We are looking forward to a wonderful day of fun, competition, and community spirit. This event not only supports physical activity and teamwork but also allows our students to contribute to a meaningful cause through Socktober.

Rosies
For a number of years now, the College has provided support for the organisation Rosies, with our senior students volunteering their time through the Rosies' Outreach Program.
Rosies is a community of people sharing the Oblate spirit of daring. Inspired by Gospel values, Rosies reaches out to those who are experiencing homelessness, loneliness or social isolation, to be present with them, offering them the experience of community, belonging and friendship. Rosies aims to offer friendship and unconditional acceptance to those who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or are experiencing social isolation or loneliness. Just as you would offer a cup of tea or coffee to a friend who was visiting your home, we do the same for our friends on the street.
Rosies Prayer
O Jesus,
make our hearts so human,
that others may feel at home with us,
so like Yours,
that others may feel at home with You,
so forgetful of self
that we might simply become the place where you and they meet
in the power of Your love and the joy of Your friendship
Amen
Included is a link to the latest Rosies' newsletter, and I would ask you to take some time today to think of those in need.
Rosies Outreach Program
Continuing with the College's tradition, three senior students this week gave up their time to volunteer for Rosies. Rosies is a St Vincent de Paul organisation that reaches out to those most in need, people who are homeless or at risk and socially isolated in our communities. The students made sandwiches and had a cup of tea and a 'friendly chat' with a number of people in this position at Burleigh Heads. Thank you to Tom Busbridge, Kate Sands and Shreya Sekhar who were accompanied by Mrs Sands this week to continue this valuable tradition.
R U OK? Day: Thursday 12 September 2024
Life serves up challenges that can sometimes make us feel overwhelmed, unsure, or unsettled. When that happens, it is comforting to know there is someone we can talk to who can share the load and help us through it.
Every year at the College, we support R U OK? Day promotion as a way of starting the conversation between students, their peers, as well as staff checking in with their colleagues. On 12 September, we encourage everyone to take part and today we've included a guide to help our students navigate an R U OK? conversation.
Remember, ask R U OK? any day because life happens every day.

To help celebrate National Science Week which ran from 10-18 August, St Joseph College students were invited to St Anthony’s Primary School at Kingscliff to be judges at their Annual Science Fair. Our students, Savannah Walton, Charlotte Martin, Tanna Crutchett and Shreya Sekhar, who all study at least one stage 6 science subject were fantastic judges. They spent time with each of the entrants, learnt about each project and then asked questions, naming winners and runners up for each learning stage. Our girls thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with a local school and the St Anthony’s students loved showing the big students their projects.

Using Book Week to Build Strong Readers
Book Week has been a great success. The theme Reading is Magic, was designed to inspire a love of reading.
There was an activity on at every lunchtime in the Library. The Poster competition was incredibly competitive, and judging is still taking place. Cryptic clues was well attended and students worked in pairs to find all the clues to the Book Week puzzle. The Write a Book in a Day competition went from 8am to 5pm. Teams of students from Years 7, 8 and 9 worked together to produce a Children’s Book that included illustration. They worked tirelessly to create fantastic scripts. Finally, the staff did a fantastic job with the Character parade and the competition was very tough to judge. Costumes were original and covered all book genres.
Underneath the fun and dress ups, there is an underlying motivation to the annual celebration of everything books. This is to provide as many opportunities as possible to support our community members to discover and embrace a lifelong passion for reading.
It is also about making reading an everyday activity that is something to be enjoyed and where stories and books can be talked about, celebrated, and recommended to others.
While there are a range of activities on offer during Book Week, there will be other opportunities to make reading enjoyable and fun.

NRCC Aussie Rules Under 14 Boys champions
The NRCC under 14 Aussie Rules trophy was played down in Byron Bay on Thursday 22 August in muddy conditions. The boys came out playing strong in their first four games, winning them all in convincing fashion. This set up a top of the table clash against the other undefeated school in Mt St Patrick’s.
The game was hot early with both sides not giving each other an inch. SJC kicked the first goal from a great set shot from Levi Baker, adding to his many goals for the day. Two more goals from Tyghe Maher and Jordan Close right on the stroke of half time gave SJC a one goal lead.
SJC came out after half time full of spirit and desperation. They started to win the midfield battle with excellent ruck work from David Conallin, who was instrumental all day, constantly breaking away from opposition and kicking the ball long in to the forward line.
With five minutes left in play Tyghe Maher put through his second goal with a beautiful left foot snap to seal the victory for SJC, 25-15.
All players played their role throughout the day. It was very pleasing to see students who didn’t have much AFL experience do some really good things and show some promising signs for future years.
Declan Bone, Axel Fitcher and Jarrah Star-Webb all starred throughout all games, constantly out running the opposition with high work ethic and great skill. Jordan Close who was sharp around goal with three goals for the day.
Nixon Stayt was a brick wall in defence, along with Boyd Miller, Riley Kippax and William Bugden as well as Cooper Beck who provided great run off half back. Paramjay Goesel, Phoenix Spry and Dominic Pirlo all kicked their first goal for SJC, with Dom Pirlo's goal being the play of the day, a 40m snap on the run from the boundary line.
Ty Harvey and Tyghe Maher provided a great target all day up forward, with Tyghe kicking eight goals across the five games. Beau Kennedy, Noah McNee, Finn Reynolds and Naith McCarthy all showed their versatility playing in a number of roles for the team across the day, always making a great impact when the ball was in their area.
Special mention to Lewis Carter who unfortunately couldn't play due to injury. Despite this, Lewis still came and was fantastic help on the day, running water to all his teammates across five games. With it being such a hot day, this proved to be a big factor in the boys being able to run out the last game of the day.

Netball NSW NGS Super Schools Cup
On Tuesday, 27 August, four teams played against local schools in the netball NSW NGS Super Schools Cup.
It was set to be an incredible day with two 7/8 Girls teams, a 9/10 Girls team and a 7/8 Boys team all excited to showcase their netball skills after lots of hard training. The 7/8 Girls Maroons team started strong and showcased great teamwork throughout the day ending with a podium finish of third. The 7/8 Girls Grey team struggled a little more, having not played with their regular teammates. The girls were courageous in effort and continued to improve over the day. The 9/10 Girls team had a slower start to the day but found their drive after playing local rivals Lindisfarne. With a huge win under their belt, they went into their final games with a top place finish in sight.
Consistency, effective skill execution and clearer communication got the final two wins and led to them finishing 1st on the day. The 7/8 Boys were equally determined to win and that they did. Undefeated all day, Mr Ward (coach) was impressed with their skill in comparison to the other teams and their use of rehearsed plays and positioning. The 9/10 Girls and the 7/8 Boys now progress to the second round of the Super Schools Cup, to be played in Lismore next week.
We wish both teams and coaches the best of luck.
