Newsletter #2 2025: Tuesday 18 March 2025
Principal's Message

Dear Members of the St Joseph’s College Family,
Saint Joseph. Pray for us.
Writing post ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred is not something I ever thought I’d be doing in my second year as school principal of St Joseph’s College, and I genuinely hope that everyone in our school community - and the wider community - has recovered from its worst effects, and that life is returning to some kind of normalcy. I appreciate the support of everyone who reached out during a most difficult time to what appeared on the news as an impending dangerous time. It was a very anxious time for all and when it was reported at landfall that Alfred was again downgraded, I am sure it was a relief for all. Our prayers were answered; we are all pilgrims of hope.
The school itself was impacted by the tropical low and there were a number of trees down, buildings and other infrastructure affected, the library closed, and quite a lot of clean-up involved - with more work still to be arranged. I extend my thanks to the grounds staff who worked tirelessly to bring about the re-opening of the College, while following all proper safety protocols as mandated by the Diocese. We not only have an obligation to follow those protocols, but it is a legal requirement that no-one is allowed on the property until the DLCS Crisis Management Team has confirmed this. That staff and students returned to the College with the grounds and access in most areas looking almost like business as usual is a testament to the work involved by our grounds staff in getting the majority of those jobs done and the College declared safe to enter.
I thank you also for your patience while all this took place. It is our first priority that your children - our students - are always in a safe environment here at the College. The sacrifice of face-to-face lessons is only ever done when it is required, or when being on the school premises is not allowed. Returning for just a couple of days last week was what some might call a best-worst outcome, meaning we were expecting the worst - and while there was some sustained damage - most classrooms have returned to normal. The work in these areas will continue as speedily and safely as possible.
St Joseph’s Day Celebrations and Liturgy: Wednesday 19 March
Tomorrow, Wednesday 19 March, we will be celebrating the Feast Day of Saint Joseph. This day has become a whole school event over the years and we will begin our celebration with a very special liturgy.
As part of this year’s liturgy, we also recognise the 10th, 20th and 30th year anniversaries of relevant staff. I thank these staff in advance of the liturgy, for all they have contributed to the College and our school community. Our long-standing staff are to be commended and we thank you for your service.
Therefore, we invite our parents and carers to join us on Wednesday 19 March at 10:40am in the Holy Family Chapel and we ask that you be seated by 10:30am if you are able to attend.
College Prayer
Dear Lord,
You chose Saint Joseph to protect your son.
We ask you, through him, to:
Guide us in our daily work,
shield us from all harm
comfort us in our time of need.
Through his example may we find:
sincerity in our endeavours
humility in our achievements
courage in our convictions
wisdom in our decisions
and the peace that is achieved through just action.
We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
All: Saint Joseph, pray for us.

2025 College Open Evening 2.0!
We look forward to welcoming prospective families - and the wider community - to our annual Open Evening, now to be held on Monday 24 March (next week), commencing at 6pm, gathering first in the College's Doyle Centre.
The staff are to be congratulated for all their hard work in ensuring that in opening our doors we showcase all the wonderful opportunities the College has to offer to prospective students and their families. There will be a number of student volunteers, and I thank all in attendance for their efforts. We are certainly looking forward to meeting students of our 2026 cohort.
We hold only one Open Evening a year, so this is a one-time event on the College calendar.
In particular, we expect a lot of interest from potential students for Year 7 2026 and ask that applicants be aware of the following when making their child's enrolment application to the College:
Important Dates for Year 7 2026 Applicants
- Monday 24 March: College Open Evening (6pm to 8pm, with tours concluding no later than 7:45pm)
- Friday 11 April: Applications Close (Week 10, Term 1)
- Monday 19 May to Wednesday 21 May: Year 7 2026 Interviews held in the Doyle Centre (Week 4, Term 2)
Additional Information
The particular information included today relates specifically to students seeking enrolment at the College in Year 7 in the next school year. (It should be noted, however, that prior to any child potentially being offered a place at St Joseph’s College, we will always need a completed enrolment application, as well as an interview with the prospective student.)
The St Joseph’s College enrolment application is to be completed online by the parents/carers of the prospective student. This is for all Year 6 students who wish to attend the College, whether they are currently at one of the parish primary schools, or attend an independent or government primary school.
Step One of the process requires a completed application form for a child to be considered for enrolment at St Joseph’s College. All supporting documentation must be submitted to complete the application.
Step Two of the process will require an enrolment interview of the prospective student, being accompanied by at least one parent, by a teaching staff member of the College. These interviews will be held in Term 2.
Bookings for a Term 2 enrolment interview can be made on Open Evening. Should you not be able to attend that event, the booking system will remain open for these appointments. It should be noted that if you make an enrolment interview but not submit your child’s enrolment application by the closing date of Friday 11 April 2025, your booking time will be vacated until such time as the application is completed.
Enrolment applications for Year 7 will be reviewed after the application cut-off date at the end of this term. Please also note your application is an expression of interest only. It does not guarantee your child a place at the College.
Please be aware applications submitted more than one (1) year prior to the year of commencement will not be reviewed until after the particular Year 7 intake application closing date. The College will still require an up-to-date application for the Year 7 intake, therefore we suggest that you make application only in the year prior, ie. while your child is in Year 6. There is no advantage to be had in attempting to apply years in advance.
If you require assistance with your application, please contact: Enrolment Officer, Ms Holland: bps-enrolments@lism.catholic.edu.au.
College Cross Country Carnival: Friday 28 March
The annual Cross Country Carnival will be taking place at the College at the end of next week, on Friday 28 March. Ms Ilic has established a great program for the day where all students will take part in the College’s annual Cross Country, either as competitors or as supporters. It should be noted that non-attendance for either the mass or the cross-country event will be recorded on school reports, so support your peers and cheer on SJC! It’s a great day to enjoy being part of the community.
Year 12 Half-Yearly Assessment Block: Week 10, Term 1
As our Year 12 families would be aware, students will participate in their Half Yearly Assessment Block in Week 10 of this term, from Monday 7 April to Thursday 10 April.
Please use the coming weeks as an opportunity to solidify your learnings. The lessons learnt before, during and after these exams will be invaluable tools for when the time comes for you to sit the HSC. Stay the course.
Year 11 Camp: Week 10, Term 1
Year 11 students will be attending their three-day camp from Wednesday 9 April to Friday 11 April. As our families would be aware, all school camps are compulsory, as agreed upon at enrolment. I hope our students truly enjoy this team-focussed experience that will undoubtedly help further build their confidence in their senior schooling and bonding as a year group - the future Class of 2026!
Easter
Easter is the most significant day in the Christian calendar, as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, marking the birth of our eternal hope. On Friday of Week 10, 11 April (the last school day for Term 1), we will be celebrating our Easter Liturgy in the Holy Family Chapel, and invite our parents and carers to join us.
As is our standard protocol, all students are expected to attend every school mass and liturgy, and I seek the support of our parents and carers in ensuring their child/ren's, attendance at school that day.
College Photo Day (New Date!): Friday 2 May
The College Photo Day was postponed from Friday 7 March and will now be taking place on Friday 2 May (Week 1, Term 2), with the Photo Catch up day scheduled for Wednesday 7 May (Week 2, Term 2). Mr Brown, Assistant Principal - Mission, speaks more on this in his article in today’s newsletter.
Afternoon Learning Hub
Our Afternoon Learning Hub will again resume this week, however, due to the Library closure it will now take place in Room 01C, until further notice. A reminder of the dates and times: Tuesday to Thursday from 3:15pm to 5pm.

Information for families
I ask that you please take the time to read through this newsletter, as you will find more important information that will help you get the most out of each day at the College.
Additionally, Compass alerts are sent out as further issues arise, or with necessary news and reminders. We do also have a social media presence and I encourage our community members to check on the College’s Facebook site and Instagram - they really do indicate how much is actually happening at school and how fast-paced life is.
Thank you for your continued support for all that we do here.
God Bless
Mr Ryan Campbell

Principal's Notes
Duty of Care and Early Departures Through the School Day
It is our Duty of Care to provide a safe and supportive environment, and this also includes being able to identify any adult who comes to our Parent Reception to collect a student. If we do not follow procedure, potentially a student could leave our school grounds with an unidentified adult, for which we are not prepared to take that risk for safety and legal reasons.
Therefore, we ask our families to follow the procedure:
If you are collecting a student early, can you please:
- Provide your child with a note (separate from the diary), briefly indicating the reason and stating the time you as parent/carer will be collecting your child from the Parent Reception (This note should be presented by the student to the Student Reception at their earliest convenience upon their arrival to school).
- Remind your child to be at the Parent Reception at the time stated in your note.
- Meet your child at the Parent Reception to sign them out from the College.
Please allow enough time to park and walk up to the Parent Reception to collect your child/ren. Please also be mindful that this process is done in the best interest of our students, your child/ren, to ensure they get to where they need to go as safely as possible. Please be patient with our staff assisting at Parent Reception to ensure these processes are followed.
Please also be aware that should you have another person collecting your child on your behalf, you should write these details in your note - If you do not make this clear, our office staff will need to verify the identity of the person who is collecting the student, and they will be asked to provide proof of identity.
We ask all visitors to please remain calm and speak with respect to our staff. They are simply following our procedure and we are doing our best to ensure the safety of our students.
A last-minute phone request for a student to leave College grounds puts the safety of a student at risk and places undue pressure on our Administration Staff. We simply ask families to follow this procedure.

Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, 6 April (end of Week 9).
Don’t forget to turn your clock back one (1) hour!
From Week 10, NSW will return to Australian Eastern Standard Time, which then remains until Daylight Savings Time recommences in October.
E-bikes
In NSW, there are two types of permitted e-bikes:
A power-assisted pedal cycle:
- has one or more motors attached with a combined maximum power output of up to 200 watts
- can't be propelled only by the motor/s
- weighs less than 50kg (including batteries)
- has a height-adjustable seat.
Electrically power-assisted cycle:
An electrically power-assisted cycle has a maximum continuous rated power of up to 500 watts. This power output must be:
- progressively reduced as the bicycle’s speed increases beyond 6km/h cut off when:
- your bicycle reaches a speed of 25km/h
- you stop pedalling and the speed exceeds 6km/h.
The rider must primarily propel these bikes – a motor can't be the only source propelling it. The motor should only help the rider, like when going uphill or facing strong winds.
Petrol-Powered bicycles
All petrol-powered bicycles are illegal on NSW roads and road-related areas like footpaths, shared paths, cycle ways and cycle paths.
This includes bicycles that:
- have a petrol-powered engine attached before or after purchase
- are powered by other types of internal combustion engines.
Petrol-powered bicycles are faster than regular bicycles, reaching moped and small motorcycle speeds.
Parents and carers should now be aware that it is illegal to ride these bicycles (petrol-powered bicycles, or e-bikes that don't comply with legislative standards) outside private property, and (we have been advised by the Lismore Catholic Schools Office) that they are banned from being stored on school property.

Student Engagement and Application Reports
St Joseph’s College provides Student Engagement and Application Reports (SEAAR) periodically throughout the year. SEAAR is a system that monitors and acknowledges students' individual effort and application in each subject. Scores are based on each student’s effort in completing classwork and homework to the best of their ability; being punctual and organised for class; and behaviour in the learning environment. SEAAR Cycle 1 was released on Friday 14 March. If you have not already done so, please visit Compass to access and view your child’s SEAAR and have a conversation with them regarding areas of strength and areas for growth.
Please note that those students who receive a ‘Gold SEAAR’ across all cycles throughout the year will be invited to attend the Rewards Day at Wet ‘n’ Wild at the end of the year.
SEAAR Cycle 2 will be released in Week 10 (Term 1).

All students are to wear the College's full school uniform.
As is the case for any school photo day, please also ensure that your child/ren comes to school appropriately groomed and dressed according to the College Uniform Policy. In particular, please note that boys need to be clean-shaven and wearing their belt. All students are required to wear their College tie for school photos, and long hair (on the collar) needs to be tied up. Students are required to take their photos without jumpers, jackets or the senior jersey.
If your child(ren) has a practical PE/Sport lesson on Photo Day, please ensure they come to school dressed in their full school uniform and that they bring their sports uniform with them to get changed.

Project Compassion 2025 - Unite Against Poverty this Lent
Lent is described as, 'a 40-day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday.' Ash Wednesday is Day One of our Lenten journey. Lent is a period of penitential preparation for the Christian feast of Easter. Lent is a time of sacrifice, meaning that it's not all about us all of the time. Lent is about good overcoming evil and light overcoming darkness.
It is a time when we are called to examine our lives and make sacrifices to help those less fortunate.
Each year, Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion brings together thousands of Australians in schools, parishes and the community to stand in solidarity with the world’s most vulnerable communities, to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. Caritas Australia has launched Project Compassion 2025, its Lenten fundraising and awareness appeal. The Catholic aid agency is calling on the community to Unite Against Poverty for Project Compassion.
We pray this Lent for a deeper trust in God’s plan. May our commitment to prayer, fasting and almsgiving, awaken within us a hunger for justice and compassion. May the Jubilee year remind us of our need for a fresh start. May our work for Project Compassion help us to Unite Against Poverty.
Caritas Australia invites you to put your compassion into action this Lent. This year’s Project Compassion launch featured the stories of three vulnerable people who have been helped to lift themselves out of poverty with the help of funds raised by Caritas supporters.
As the Mission Facilitator of Caritas Australia, Mr Michael McGirr, stated in his welcome to this year's fundraising support:
During Lent, we are called to be good news for the poor. Project Compassion is a wonderful way to do this. This year, as always, we will be sharing some very personal stories. They represent just a fraction of the work you support through Project Compassion. We will hear from Toefuata’iga in Samoa, Lam from rural Vietnam, and Irene from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I am sure you will find them challenging and inspiring.
Toefuata'iga's story, Samoa
Meet Toefuata'iga, a primary school student in Samoa who faced severe challenges and disruptions to her learning due to water scarcity. Toefuata'iga, (Toy-foo-ah-tah-ing-ah) is a 13-year-old, 8th grade primary school student in Samoa. Her primary school in Upolu, Samoa, grappled with severe water scarcity that disrupted education and jeopardised students' health. Toefuata'iga and her classmates faced frequent early dismissals and missed lessons due to a lack of clean water...
We pray for all those whose access to food and water is insecure. May the whole human family respond generously in creating lasting justice in the distribution of life’s necessities. May we respond to opportunities such as those presented by Project Compassion this Lent to Unite Against Poverty. May we all be one.
Lam's story, Vietnam
Follow Lam, a young man with a disability in rural Vietnam, on his journey from isolation to independence. Growing up in rural Vietnam, 27 year old Lam dreamed of becoming a graphic artist, but faced limited opportunities due to his physical disability. While his peers pursued careers after high school, Lam remained at home, feeling isolated and disconnected from his aspirations and society...
We pray for all those who live with disability, especially those who are stigmatised in any way. May we do all we can to support their flourishing as truly equal participants in the human family.
Irene's story, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Irene is a 25-year-old single mother of two boys living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite experiencing extreme poverty, she has become a skilled seamstress and can now support her children’s education with her income...
We pray for those driven away from their homes by violence, persecution or poverty, especially women. May our hearts be open to do all we can to rebuild the lives of others through supporting Caritas Australia and the work of Project Compassion. May we be instruments of God’s peace and pilgrims of hope. We pray that all women may be respected and encouraged to take their rightful place in society. We pray also that all people will have access to clean water and safe housing. May we Unite Against Poverty as we act for justice in concrete ways, such as through Project Compassion.
I leave you with the Lenten Prayer provided by Project Compassion.
Mrs Hannah Ardrey
Leader of School Evangelisation
Project Compassion Lenten Prayer
God of our journey
we are all pilgrims of hope
brought together by your love
and your wish that we may all be one.
We pray that in this Year of Jubilee
when we are called to greater justice
and care for our common home
that we may Unite Against Poverty.
May we work in unity for the freedom
of the oppressed and the renewal of creation.
may our compassionate minds
and generous hearts help bring about a
world where all can live in peace.
May our Lenten pilgrimage of
fasting, almsgiving and prayer
bring us closer to your loving heart.
We ask this in the name of Jesus.
Amen.

St Joseph's Day: 19 March
This is a reminder that tomorrow, 19 March, the College will be celebrating St Joseph’s Day in honour of the Feast Day of Saint Joseph. This is a significant event in the life of the College, and we will be celebrating it in a number of ways, including a student mufti-day, a whole school mass, as well as other activities in a fete-style format for the afternoon.
Students are asked to ensure that if they choose to wear mufti it is in house colours and they do so with attire that is suitable for such an occasion.
Please note that this is a compulsory day of attendance for all students.
St Joseph's Day is also an opportunity for College fundraising as it falls in the Lenten season when we collect for Caritas Australia as part of their annual Project Compassion campaign. For this to occur, students are asked for a gold coin donation for the mufti component of the day, with each AWC organising a stall to run in the afternoon during the fete-style session.
During this part of the day, there will be a number of food stalls (pizza, sushi, burgers, hotdogs and many more) for students to purchase. Alternatively, students can bring their own lunch. Please note that the College Canteen will not be taking lunch orders that day, however, will be open for the recess break. There will be larger activities like Radioactive meltdown, Kapow, an Obstacle Course Dunk tank and Gladiator.
An "SJC BANK" has been set up as tokens will be used in all stalls. Students began their pre-purchase on Monday, and tokens will still be able to be purchased on the day. Please be mindful that no refunds will be given on the day and any unspent tokens will be considered a donation to our fundraising efforts.
We look forward to another great day where students can celebrate being a member of the St Joseph's College Community.

Students who attended the carnival had a fun-filled time as they embraced the ‘Aussie Icons’ theme and enjoyed the sunshine whilst participating in a variety of events with their friends and housemates.
I applaud all the students who stepped up and competed in the championship races to ensure they did all they could to contribute to their house points. The students’ enthusiasm and team spirit are what made the carnival so competitive and enjoyable. I congratulate and thank them all for their wonderful efforts and cooperation on the day.
A big thank you to the house leaders who worked hard not only throughout the day but also in the lead-up to promote participation and create carnival cheer, you did a fantastic job.
Congratulations to all age champions on their success at the carnival. A special mention must go to Kye Thompson and Autumn Squires who both broke two College records.
